About 19.58% of state’s geographical area {37,550 sq. km.} is under forest cover {India State of Forest Report 2021}. Among the 4500 flowering plant species present in the state 1956 species have medicinal value.  Vegetation in Karnataka comprises of tropical rain forest, evergreen forest, semi-deciduous, deciduous, grasslands, scrub to thorny forest. The natural forest of the state harbours about 1698 species of medicinal plants across various habits and habitats. The remaining 258 taxa are either cultivated or planted in gardens or available along the roadsides (Ved et al., 2004).

Karnataka is a potential state in terms of traded medicinal plants.  The enormous medicinal plant resource of the state, its demand and the threats imposed have necessitated the conservation and sustainable management of the resource. Hence, the Karnataka State Medicinal Plants Authority was established in the state.

Karnataka State Medicinal Plants Authority (KaMPA) was established in 2002 to facilitate all aspects of the development of medicinal plants in Karnataka vide Government Order No. FEE 33 FDS 2001 Dated: 27.02.2002. The headquarters is located at Bangalore.  This Authority was formerly functioning under the Department of the Forests, Ecology and Environment.  It has been brought under the administrative control of AYUSH, Department of Health and Family Welfare vide Government Order No. FEE 147 FAP 2018 , Bangalore, Dated 28.06.2019.

KaMPA acts as a nodal agency at the state level to coordinate and implement various schemes and programs.
